Fishing — Full Guide

Available from level 10 · any race or class

Fishing is a side profession to combat. You cast your line into a lake or river, wait for the fish to bite, and win a timing and reflex minigame using two skills: Pumping and Reeling.

Each fish caught can be open and turns into materials (oils, scales, gems, and bones). These materials are exchanged for Proof of Catching a Fish, the Fishing Guild currency. With it you buy skills that increase the inventory, the warehouse, the private store and the recipe book.

Fishing also gives access to 9 quests, to the Fishing Shot and to the weekly championship Fishing King, which pays prizes in adena.

Luminous Lure during the day: the server checks the game time. With a night lure used outside of night, the fish flees and the bait is lost. Night in Lineage II lasts about 1 real hour every 4 hour cycle.

Fishing Shots

They work like soulshots, but for fishing: double the damage of the next Pumping or Reeling. The shot's grade needs to be the same as the rod. Enable automatic use with a right-click, just like a soulshot.

Fisherman's potions

A Fisherman's Potion makes Fishing Expertise "pretend" to be a lower level during 1 hour. It's used to fish lower-level fish, for example a specific quest chest or the fish color you want. To use it you need the Expertise at the indicated level.

All of them cost 5.000 adena as the base price at the fisherman's shop. The fish's level still has the normal ±1 variation.

Step 1 · Cast the line

  1. Equip everythingRod in the weapon hand and lure in the shield slot. If you have one, activate the Fishing Shot matching the rod's grade.
  2. Find a fishing zoneThese are lakes, rivers and sea shores near the towns and the Fishing Guild NPCs. Not all water is a fishing zone.
  3. Turn towards the waterThe bait drops between 150 and 200 units in front of you, in the direction your character is facing. Stay on the shore, facing open water.
  4. Use the Fishing skill1 bait is consumed, the character stays still and the bobber appears on the water.
You can't fish: in the water (swimming), on a boat, with a private store open, or crafting items. It also doesn't work if the bait lands outside a fishing zone or behind an obstacle that hides the water.

Step 2 · The Bite

As soon as the line drops, the server already rolls the fish:

Wait time

  • In the first 10 seconds no fish bites.
  • After that, at each check (of 2 to 5 s, depending on the fish) it has between 40% and 66% chance of biting.
  • The lure grade changes the interval: High Grade checks 34% faster and Low Grade 33% slower.
  • If nothing bites within 30 seconds, appears "The bait has been lost because the fish got away".
When the fish bites, appears "You got a bite!", plays a sound and opens the fishing window with the fish's HP bar and the timer. That's when the minigame begins.

Step 3 · The minigame

Objective: bring the fish's HP to zero before the timer runs out. The fish alternates between two states, and each state calls for a skill:

Calm fish · HP steady
Pumping
During the day. At night, use Reeling.
Fish fighting · HP rising on its own
Reeling
During the day. At night, use Pumping.
  • Right skill: the fish loses HP equal to the damage. Message: "Pumping/Reeling is successful".
  • Wrong skill: the fish recovers that same amount. Message: "The fish resisted… HP regained".
  • Every 2 seconds, the fish has 30% chance to switch state. It starts calm 80% of the time.
  • While fight, the fish regenerates HP every second. That's how you recognize the state: the bar fills up on its own.
  • Any attempt has 10% chance of failing ("The fish has resisted your attempt"), with no damage and no healing.
Golden rule: watch the HP bar, not just the icon. Bar rising on its own = Reeling (during the day). Bar stopped = Pumping (during the day). If it appears "HP regained", switch skills on the spot.

Upper Grade Fish that trick you

With Luminous lures (night) the fish appear Upper Grade. Every once in a while they pretend the state: the window shows the fake HP warning and the icon suggests the wrong skill. The bar rule still applies. If it's rising on its own, the fish is regenerating, and the right skill is the "fighting fish" one.

Training simulator

Train here before going to the water. The rules are the same as the server's: 2 s cooldown, 30% state change, 10% failure and regeneration while the fish fights.

0 = caughtStarting HP2× = the fish flees
Click "Cast the line" to begin.
Training fish: HP 600, regeneration 18/s, skill damage 60 (120 with shot).

Damage and penalty

damage = skill power × (1 + 0.1 × rod grade) × 2 (if using Fishing Shot)
  • Rod grade: no grade = 0, D = 1, C = 2, B = 3, A = 4, S = 5.
  • Example: Pumping level 13 (power 109) with Pelican Rod (C) and Fishing Shot = 109 × 1.2 × 2 = 261 of damage.
  • Penalty: if Pumping or Reeling is 3+ levels above of Fishing Expertise, the strike loses 50 of damage.
A level 13 fish has about 650 HP and ~21 regeneration. With 261 damage, 3 solid hits catch it. Without shot it's 131 per hit and you need about 6.

Match the chest's level. The bait only catches chests, but the level still comes from your Fishing Expertise (50% same, 36% one below, 14% one above). Leave your Expertise at the same level as the chest (9, 12, 16 or 20) or use a Fisherman's Potion to lower it.
Don't open the chest! The fisherman only accepts the chest closed. If you open it, you need to fish another one.

Fishing King Championship

Every week the Fishing Guild rewards whoever catches the biggest fish. Every fish caught is measured automatically and, if it's among the biggest, it enters the ranking. See the ranking at "Fishing Contest" at any fisher or on the ranking button of the fishing window.

Prizes of the week
1th place800.000
2th place500.000
3th place300.000
4th place200.000
5th place100.000
How to earn
  • Use Prize-Winning Lures: they increase the size of the fish.
  • Fish a lot: each catch is a new size roll.
  • Once the week ends, the top 5 redeem the prize in "Claim Prize".
  • The prize must be claimed within up to 1 week.

Quick tips

  • Start with beginner bait. With 35 s of combat and less regeneration, they're the best way to get into rhythm.
  • Level up the three skills together. Fishing Expertise determines the fish, and Pumping/Reeling above it take a penalty.
  • Always use Fishing Shot. Double damage means half the hits and less chance of the fish escaping.
  • Place the skills on the F1–F3 bar. Fishing, Pumping, and Reeling side by side so you can react quickly.
  • Don't press the skill for no reason. Each mistake heals the fish. If in doubt, wait half a second and look at the bar.
  • Keep an eye on the game clock. At night the minigame rule reverses and Luminous lures start working.
  • Chests are worth more than fish. Besides the materials, they give Proof of Catching a Fish directly.
